Maren Margrethe Froelich was born in Fresno, California of Danish parents on June 28, 1868. She studied art in San Francisco in the studio of William Keith and at the School of Design under Virgil Williams, Emil Carlsen, Amédée Joullin, and Arthur Mathews.
